Energy Is the Universe's Only Currency
Everything that ever happened required energy to make it happen.

When you drop your phone and it shatters on the floor, something invisible traveled from your hand, through the air, into the screen. No object moved it. No one pushed it. So what the hell just broke your screen?
Here's the short answer: energy did it. But that word gets thrown around so much it's almost lost its meaning. Energy drinks. Renewable energy. 'I have no energy today.' None of that tells you what energy actually is. So here's the real definition, stripped down: energy is the ability to cause change. That's it. If something can make anything different โ€” move it, heat it, break it, rearrange it โ€” it has energy. Your falling phone had it. The sun has it. The food you ate this morning had it. Even you, sitting still right now, have it stored in your muscles and cells.
So what are the disguises? Energy shows up in a handful of forms you interact with every day: โ€” Kinetic energy: energy of movement. Your car at 60mph. A thrown baseball. Your fingers typing. โ€” Potential energy: energy stored in position or condition. A boulder at the top of a hill. A stretched rubber band. The food in your fridge. โ€” Thermal energy: the jittery motion of atoms. What you feel as heat. โ€” Chemical energy: energy locked in molecular bonds. Gasoline, batteries, the sandwich you had for lunch. โ€” Electrical energy: electrons moving through a wire. Every device you own runs on this. โ€” Radiant energy: energy traveling as waves. Light. Radio signals. The warmth you feel from the sun. These aren't separate things. They're the same thing wearing different outfits.

Your phone shattered when it hit the floor. But what actually broke the screen โ€” what invisible thing traveled from your hand to the glass and caused all that damage?
A
The impact force โ€” a push that transferred directly from your hand through the air
B
Energy โ€” stored in the phone's height, then converted into destructive motion
C
Gravity โ€” it pulled the phone down and gravity is what broke it

Example
That's what broke your screen โ€” energy converting from one form to another. Watch the same principle play out when you charge your phone and then watch a video on it. Chemical energy in the power plant's fuel โ†’ electrical energy through the grid โ†’ chemical energy stored in your battery โ†’ electrical energy flowing through the phone โ†’ light energy on the screen + thermal energy (why your phone gets warm) + sound energy from the speaker. Every step is a conversion. At no point did energy appear or vanish. It just kept changing form, passing the baton from one type to the next. By the time a photon from your screen hits your eye, it started its journey as coal or gas burned in a plant somewhere. That's the chain.

Key Insight
The Conservation of Energy: energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another. This isn't a guideline. It's one of the most battle-tested laws in all of science. Every machine ever built, every reaction ever measured, every star ever observed has obeyed it without exception. If you ever think energy 'disappeared,' you just haven't found where it went yet.
If energy is always conserved, why do batteries die? Why do you get tired? Why does everything seem to run down? Conservation doesn't mean useful. When your laptop battery drains, that chemical energy doesn't vanish โ€” it becomes heat, light, sound. But heat scattered into the room is basically useless. You can't easily collect it back up and turn it back into electricity. The energy still exists. It's just spread out, diluted, no longer organized enough to do much. This is the secret tragedy of energy: it's never destroyed, but it's constantly becoming less useful. That's a whole other idea called entropy โ€” and it's the reason you can't build a perpetual motion machine no matter how clever you are.

Key Insight
Energy is measured in joules. One joule is roughly the energy it takes to lift a small apple one meter off the ground. Your body burns about 8 million joules a day. A lightning bolt releases about 1 billion joules in a fraction of a second. The sun pumps out 3.8 ร— 10ยฒโถ joules every single second. Same unit. Wildly different scales.
